Gibson L5 CES Sunburst de 2013

La Gibson L-5 est l’une des guitares les plus importantes de l’histoire du jazz et de la guitare archtop.

Elle est introduite en 1922 par la firme américaine Gibson et marque une rupture majeure dans la conception des guitares acoustiques.

Le développement de la L-5 est étroitement lié à Lloyd Loar, ingénieur acousticien et musicien, alors employé par Gibson.
Inspiré par la lutherie du violon, Loar applique à la guitare des principes jusque-là réservés aux instruments à archet.

La L-5 est ainsi la première guitare de série à table et fond sculptés, et la première à adopter des ouïes en forme de f, à la place de la rosace ronde traditionnelle.

À l’origine, la L-5 est une guitare acoustique de 16 pouces de largeur, destinée à offrir une projection sonore suffisante pour les orchestres de jazz et de danse de l’époque.
Elle devient rapidement un instrument de référence auprès des professionnels !

Durant les années 1930, la L-5 évolue : son corps est élargi à 17 pouces, ce qui améliore encore la puissance et la profondeur du son.

Elle s’impose alors comme la guitare archtop haut de gamme par excellence...

Sa fabrication soignée, ses bois sélectionnés (épicéa pour la table, érable pour le fond et les éclisses) et ses finitions luxueuses en font un instrument prestigieux !

À la fin des années 1950, Gibson adapte la L-5 à l’ère de l’amplification. En 1958 apparaît la L-5 CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish), équipée d’un pan coupé et de micros humbuckers.
Cette version permet aux guitaristes d’accéder plus facilement aux aigus et de jouer à des volumes adaptés aux scènes modernes, tout en conservant les qualités acoustiques de l’archtop !

La L-5 devient alors un pilier du jazz électrique. Elle est associée à de nombreux guitaristes majeurs, parmi lesquels Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell ou Tal Farlow, qui contribuent à définir le son du jazz guitare moderne.

Aujourd’hui, la Gibson L-5 est toujours produite en quantités limitées par le Gibson Custom Shop. Elle demeure un instrument de très haut niveau, à la fois guitare de scène, objet de collection et symbole de l’âge d’or du jazz...

The Gibson L-5 is one of the most important guitars in the history of jazz and archtop guitar design.

It was introduced in 1922 by the American company Gibson and marked a major breakthrough in acoustic guitar construction.

The development of the L-5 is closely linked to Lloyd Loar, an acoustic engineer and musician who was employed by Gibson at the time. Inspired by violin making, Loar applied principles to the guitar that had previously been reserved for bowed string instruments.

The L-5 was therefore the first production guitar to feature a carved top and back, and the first to adopt f-holes instead of the traditional round soundhole.

Originally, the L-5 was a 16-inch wide acoustic guitar, designed to provide sufficient sound projection for the jazz and dance orchestras of the time. It quickly became a reference instrument among professionals.

During the 1930s, the L-5 evolved: its body was widened to 17 inches, which further enhanced its power and depth of tone.

It then established itself as the ultimate high-end archtop guitar.
Its meticulous craftsmanship, selected tonewoods (spruce for the top, maple for the back and sides) and luxurious finishes made it a prestigious instrument.

At the end of the 1950s, Gibson adapted the L-5 to the era of amplification. In 1958, the L-5 CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish) appeared, featuring a cutaway and humbucking pickups.
This version allowed guitarists easier access to the upper frets and enabled them to play at volumes suited to modern stages, while retaining the acoustic qualities of an archtop.

The L-5 then became a cornerstone of electric jazz. It is associated with many major guitarists, including Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell and Tal Farlow, who helped define the sound of modern jazz guitar.

Today, the Gibson L-5 is still produced in limited quantities by the Gibson Custom Shop. It remains a top-level instrument, both a stage guitar, a collector’s item and a symbol of the golden age of jazz.
